Here are the 8 beers that are commonly found in bars in United States that you should stop drinking immediately.


Many of us choose what we eat very carefully, or at least dedicate our minimum attention to it. But when it comes to drinks, especially alcoholic beverages, we do little to make the best decisions for our health. Which is a HUGE mistake. All the work for your body can be ruined in a weekend out. While foods and non alcoholic beverages are required to list their ingredients and are monitored by the FDA, beer does not belong in either. Alcohol industry had lobbied for years to avoid labeling its ingredients. Some to protect its recipes, but most – to hide harmful ingredients.

Here’s a list of some harmful ingredients that are commonly found in beer:

1. Newcastle Brown Ale

The Newcastle beer has been found to contain caramel coloring. Class 3 and 4 caramel coloring is made from ammonia, which is classified as a carcinogen. While alcohol is a carcinogen itself, drinking it in moderation may decrease your chances at developing cancer. However, more added carcinogens will have the opposite effect. “The one and only” beer with extra cancer causing qualities.

2. Budweiser

One of the most popular beers, or most advertised is Budweiser. Budweiser contains genetically modified (GMO) corn. In 2007, Greenpeace discovered experimental GMO rice in Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) beer.

3. Corona Extra

I used to love Corona’s commercials. They were so peaceful and relaxing. That is until I found out that the beer contains GMO Corn Syrup and Propylene Glycol. Propylene Glycol is controversial, and is said to may be potentially harmful to your health.

4. Miller Lite

This is another very popular beer in America that contains GMOs. Miller Lite contains GMO corn and corn syrup. It’s “GMO time”.

5. Michelob Ultra

Less popular but still readily available Michelob beer, should be eliminated from your choices. This beer has been found to contain a genetically modified sweetener (GMO dextrose).

6. Guinness

Guinness is often praised for it’s smoothness.  However, several investigations proved that Guinness ingredients are quite disturbing. The beer contains isinglass, an ingredient which comes from fish bladder and high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup has been long banned from many stores and drinks.

Update: Good news! We’ve contacted Guinness and they have stated that they no longer use high fructose corn syrup in any of their beers.

7. Coors Light

Coors light is a drink that is very popular at bars and among college students.  Mostly because its cheap. The beer contains GMO corn syrup.

Healthy Beer Alternatives

So when it comes to beer you have to be very careful. Your best option is to find a microbrewery that you can trust. As with everything, try to avoid cheap, low-quality products. Bars may offer Coors Light, Miller Lite or Budweiser specials, but they are cheap for a reason. The rest of the world is banning GMOs everywhere, while USA is lagging years behind, and only several states offer GMO labeling laws. Try to stay away from any American beers. Choose organic beer. Beers that contain 100% organic labels, have to have ingredients that are all 100% organic. While an “organic” label just means 95% of it will be organic.  European beer is most likely to be safe from GMO ingredients but unfortunately, most other beer contains GMO artificial ingredients, stabilizers, grains and preservatives, plus, HFCS.

  1. Isinglass is in every single on of those beers including the ones that you labeled as unpasteurised and unfiltered are both pasteurised and filtered.

    This is all part of the brewing process and the isinglass drops to the bottom of the barrel during condition. It’s to help clear the haze in beer.

    Trust me I am a brewer.

    However I have know doubt about the gmos in the products stated.

  2. Technically all food based products are GMO. Throughout the past 5000 years we humans genetically modified food through selective breeding. In fact, it became so second nature that only heirloom plants can be considered non GMO. All science does is accelerate that process for us rather than wait 500 years for it to happen.

    • Maybe it’s a faster and disturbing GMO acceleration, because nature doesn’t mix frog or fish genes with plants genes in a million years. ¿Or, it does?

    • Thats not true, genetic modification is alot different then selective breeding and most if not all of what they do with genetically modified plants would never occur through breeding.

    • There is a difference between modified and modified for the highest profit.
      There is no good reason why someone should be consuming high fructose corn syrup.

    • You’re thinking of selective breeding my friend. GMO usually refers to organisms that has had its genetics altered in a lab, usually spliced with another organisms genetics for some stupid favourable characteristic. The drawbacks from this are still unknown but many lab rats eating GMO are dying from huge golf ball- sized tumours. Fun. Fun.

    • GMO is not the same as grafting or selective breeding. We can’t cross a fish with a potato without genetic modification. The bigger issue is the pesticides that are sold alongside GMO soy and corn.

    • As has been pointed out, that GMO food is different from hybridization or cross breeding, long used safely in agriculture. It involves altering, artificially, by laboratory means, the DNA of plants. As such, the plants are invasive, as they crossbreed with other organic plants to produce more DNA altered plants. In the US, where Monsanto lobbies heavily and has been able to have Congress introduce laws which favor GMO breeding over organic breeding, GMO DNA altered products are most often not even labeled. In fact, legally, if the invasive GMO plants crossbreed with a field of organic plants through wind blowing pollen, it is inexplicably, the organic farmer which is severely penalized. In Europe, the attitude is very different, and many countries have outlawed GMO grains and other GMO foods, which are invasive species, and nearly impossible to control once they are in regular production. Many studies have shown that eating GMO foods may be harmful. I will let each person do the research about the studies to decide for themselves. Reading the results of research is very different, as we know from studies about smoking, from reading material meant to bolster sales. And Davin is right, that the over use of pesticides, and I also add, the use of antibiotics in agricultural animals, are even a bigger issues, but they are perhaps easier to control.

      • I will leave one more comment. The DNA of crops is not exactly the same as other crops of the same type, as scientists from Monsanto are able to identify this DNA to sue farmers which have had their more valuable organic crops crossbred by the GMO plants. Without good reason, only because of Monsanto’s extensive lobbying efforts in Congress, as I have stated above, it is the injured party infected by the invasive of the undesired GMO pollens which is severely penalized. Some GMO crops grow their own types of chemical pesticides, so pesticide application are not necessary, but some studies show that the pesticides grown into the plants through GMOs can damage the inside of our stomach linings. In the mean time, it is nearly impossible to identify GMO foods at the retail level for those who choose not to eat GMO foods because they are not labeled.

  3. Brewers/Distillers use Isinglass/Egg White to clarify beverages, some Vodkas are even filtered through Bone Charcoal to clarify/purify.

    MCD and without a doubt Hungry Jacks/BK/KFC/Any Fast Food outlet douse their inedible shit with a cocktail of chemicals.

    The Human Race is armed with this knowledge but they just shrug their shoulders as they bite into their burger and swig on their high fructose drink

      • Everyone dies, my friend. Even those who eschew GMOs. And most people breed long before that happens, including those who drink HFC and other “scary” ingredients. So that isn’t natural selection at all, is it?

  4. In Germany there is a rule called Purity-Law (Rheinheitsgebot)

    It says the only things you are allowed to use for beer are:

    Malt/Barley (Gerstenmalz)
    Hops (Hopfen)
    Water (Wasser)
    and Yeast (Hefe)
    If there is more in the beer, you are not allowed to call it a beer… you have to call it Radler (beer and lemon), Alster (beer and orange),
    Alkoholhaltiges-Getränk (Alcoholic Softdrink) or something else, but not beer.

    So buy German beer like WARSTEINER or VELTINS or PADERBORNER or HERFORDER or sth. else if u want to have no harmful extra additives in your beer.
    (Those upside (from me) called beers are (isotonic and) natural from ingredients and PADERBORNER is natural from the energy , too (more than 30% of the energy to brew PADERBORNER is from Wind-Turbines))

    • Naja ein kleines Problem gibt’s trotzdem, nämlich, dass keine anderen Inhaltsstoffe als diese 4 nachweisbar sein dürfen. Viele Bierhersteller mischen aber dennoch z.B. Stoffe mit hinein, die das Bier länger haltbar machen. Diese sind aber am Schluss nur noch in so geringem Maße vorhanden, dass sie nicht mehr nachweisbar sind. Ohne diesen Trick würde ein Bier niemals ein halbes Jahr oder länger haltbar sein! Reinheitsgebot ist bestimmt eine super Sache, aber verlässlich leider nicht.

My uncle was a Brown Ale plonky, he would have a few pints for his breakfast and have 4 pints for his 10 o clock and 4 pints for his dinner and then go out on the evening for a session usually 8 pints, he died young. but then again I live in the North East of England and The Broon Dog is the regular tipple.

  6. Well I would suppose drinking the oldest drug known to mankind may be somewhat bad for you. Oh wait there was weed, that is the oldest drug known to mankind. Found possibly before alcohol based on carbon dating and endo cannabinoid receptors. Alcohol is just the most profitable. Sorry I don’t see how I got those mixed up based on all the advertising on sponsored television 🙁

  7. GMO’s, or Genetically Modified Organisms are not per definition bad. The fact that they are merely classified as “GMO”-containing, instead of what has actually been changed about the genetics of such organisms is what’s dangerous. I’m not saying GMO’s are a good thing (or bad), but saying they are unhealthy is a plain untruth. I thought you guys were a bit more resolute when it came to science, instead it seems you’re afraid of the unknown.

  8. Sugar is sugar…doesn’t matter if it comes from beets, cane, or corn. Cutting a starch molecule with high pressure steam to form C6 H12 O6 is not a bad thing.

  9. there is nothing wrong with GMO’s. We have genetically modified organisms for thousands of years by selecting the biggest of the crop. STOP SPREADING BULLSHIT.

  10. Isinglass is in almost every beer ever made. Starting a petition to have our sacred Guinness removed from this list. Up to the ’80’s this was recommended to pregnant mothers in ireland because of its iron content.

  11. Let’s be sceptical for a second and go through this list ourselves shall we?

    GMO Corn Syrup – not inherently any worse than regular corn syrup
    GMO Corn – same as above
    High Fructose Corn Syrup – not exactly good for you but it’s everywhere whether you like it or not
    Fish Bladder – or isinglass, used in practically all beers and many other places, perfectly natural and safe
    Propylene Glycol – toxic at extremely high quantities only, nearly impossible to reach high enough levels through food or drink consumption alone. Used in ice creams also
    Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) – used as food seasoning for 100+ years, there are beliefs that it might cause headaches and discomfort but controlled tests have never yielded such results
    Natural Flavors – what’s bad about natural flavours? seriously?
    GMO Sugars – see number one
    Caramel Coloring – in the quantities used no ill effects. doesn’t cause cancer or mutations, some people might be allergic to some colours but that’s about it
    Insect-Based Dyes – again, seriously? there are no health risks, no side effects, nothing about insect-based dyes that are bad for you. NOTHING. besides it’s not like you taste it anyway.
    Carrageenan – can be harmful if consumed regularly and in large quantities but worst it will do is cause inflammation in the intestines, something regular and large consumption of alcohol will probably do anyway
    BPA – based on hundreds of studies perfectly safe in low quantities that might occur in our foods

    Now I’m not saying this whole list is BS… Oh wait. I am. This whole list is nothing more than ignorant BS from people who fear a food dye that has pulverized insect shells in it more than getting run over by a car while walking to work.

  12. why is it that in all gmo food articles someone comes up with ‘actually all food is technically gmo’. NO IT ISN’T!!!!! GMO is ‘technically’ splicing genes of something into the genes of another. Most of our food over the past thousand(s) of years is ‘hybridization’ not gmo. BIG difference. Those who write how our food is gmo are usually shills. GMO is a relatively new thing.
    To bad we can’t get rid of the shills in promoting truth to the people who want to learn the truth.

  15. Sierra Nevada says “All our bottled beer is brewed, filtered and packaged without the use of isinglass, bone char or any other animal byproduct. Our beers are brewed with two row malted barley, whole cone hops, yeast and water.”

  17. In my country (European Union)all the food and drinks have to show the hole ingredients in the label, my favorite beer it’s 100% malt, so it’s organic and your belly can grow organic too! come to Europe to get drunk! see you at bars!!

  18. Obviously the author must own a “for profit” organic farm. GMOs are the most tested Food products on the market and have NEVER caused a health issue. I use them in my brewing as I prefer TOP QUALITY corn and wheat and barley instead of insect and disease ridden organic crap. As to isinglass, use it all the time.

  19. Some of those good beers treat their brew water with phosphoric acid; puts them on my do not drink list. Brew your own, it’s cheaper and better.

  26. With all the local microbrewery and Michigan brewed beers, can you generate a list of the growing in popularity beers and how I can identify the less than safe ones?
