AUSTRALIA – The Victorian government is leading the way in the international community by fast tracking accessibility of the medicinal cannabidiol oral solution for children with epilepsy.
The southern state has issued intentions to grow cannabis locally for medical use by mid-2017, but in the meantime, will import the cannabidiol solution from a Canadian company for initial trials involving epileptic children.
Daniel Andrews, the Victorian Premier, signed off on the lifesaving plan that allowed the cannabidiol solution Tilray into the country last week.
“This is too important to wait. That’s why we’re doing everything we can to make sure those families in the greatest need can access this life-changing treatment for their kids as soon as possible,” the premier said.
“This is the first time in Victoria kids with severe epilepsy will be able to legally access medicinal cannabis.”
The cannabidiol solution Tilray will be given to 29 critically ill children who suffer multiple seizures daily, reports Business Insider. These children have been nominated as the most in need of this treatment by paediatric neurologists.
The first harvests of the Victorian cannabis crops are “currently being formulated into medicine.” Premier Andrews announced that as more becomes available, more children suffering from severe intractable epilepsy will be able to access this potentially lifesaving drug.
“No family should ever have to choose between breaking the law and watching their child suffer,” Premier Andrews said.
“I have seen firsthand how medicinal cannabis can change lives – and that is why we are making sure families can access it as quickly as possible.”
