Europe was once again thrown into turmoil after the radical Islamists unleashed a terror rampage in the Spanish city of Barcelona, plowing a van into a packed summer crowd at the renowned Las Ramblas avenue, killing 13 and injuring over 130.
Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan national who drove the van, was shot dead on Monday after he was cornered by armed police while wearing a fake suicide vest. Four suspects – Driss Oukabir, Sahal el Karib, Mohammed Aalla and Mohamed Houli Chemlal – were subsequently arrested. Police believe all 12 members of terror cell are in custody or dead.
When it became clear the attack was inspired and carried out by radical Islamists, up to 1,000 Muslims in Barcelona gathered to denounce the heinous attack. The protesters gathered at the famous Plaza de Catalunya, few yards from where the terrorist mowed down the victims. Some joined the protest from other cities across Spain.
A lot of protestors were seen crying. Others held up large banners and posters condemning the violence. Some of the placards read ‘Musulmans contra el terrorisme’ – ‘Muslims against terrorism’ in English.
After marching through the city center, the protesters gathered around a makeshift memorial on top of the Joan Miro mosaic in Las Ramblas, where people have been paying their tributes to the victims. Some were seen offering special funeral prayers for the victims.
This is not the first time Muslims have openly condemned appalling violence perpetrate by radical Islamists. In June, when similar terror attack left 7 people dead in London, over 130 imams and Islamic religious leaders in the city refused to perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer for the attackers. The attackers were buried without the prayers.
The Islamic leaders took the unanimous decision to protest the radical Islamists using Islam as an excuse to attack unarmed innocent civilians. The imams took to social media to urge other Islamic religious leaders to adopt similar measures and send a clear message to those who murder innocent people: that no Islamic leader will stand by them.
