Not all cops are indeed bad. Between 2015 and 2016, policing in the U.S. came under close public scrutiny. The impunity some officers were unleashing on those they are supposed to protect was just disgusting. Many innocent lives have been lost through the recklessness of some police officers.
However, some cops are determined to rewrite the story in order to bring back public confidence in the profession. And of course, these cops are doing amazing work, going the extra mile to discharge even duties outside their mandate.
A story widely shared on social media has revealed that police officers from the city of Forth Worth, Texas have gone to the aid of a 95-year-old man named Julius Hatley after he reported to the police that he was dying out of an intense heat.
According to the viral story, the Fort Worth area was hit with severe heat in the past few weeks. Temperature in the area is said to have gone up to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The old man had an air conditioning, but has broken down. Without the machine for cool air, Mr Hatley had no choice than to bear the brunt of the heat. The situation got worse to the point that the old man had to sit outside on his porch for many hours in an attempt to beat the heat.
Despite this attempt, Hatley was still feeling the heat. He eventually gave up and decided to report the situation to the emergency services whether he could get help. When he called the emergency line, the police responded.
The Fort Worth Police Department is said to have placed the call low priority, but two officers–William Margolis and Christopher Weir paid Mr Hatley a visit at his residence. When the officers got there, they had compassion for the old man.
The two officers pledged to help the old man. That same day, the two went to Home Depot, a store that deals in air conditioning. It is unusual to see officers in uniform purchasing something like air conditioning, so workers at Home Depot asked what they were going to with the machine. The officers told them that they were purchasing it for an old man who is suffering from the severe heat.
Hearing this, Home Depot workers gave a discount of $150, appreciating the kind gesture of the officers. The officers, with another colleague, then returned to Mr Hatley’s house and installed the new air conditioner.
“When we got there around 8.30 a.m. his house was 85 to 90 degrees already. In Texas, it gets hot. He was actually really excited. He said he knew if he needed help to call 911 and we actually were able to help him, so he was really excited about it”, Margolis told CBS News.
Many on social media have praised the officers for their kind gesture. Some people have also pledge to help renovate the house of Mr Hatley, and also provide him with groceries every week.
